- Drivers 55 and older qualify for Florida's mature driver discount by completing an FLHSMV-approved course, typically a 6-hour course available online.
- The discount is authorized by Section 627.0652, Florida Statutes, and typically lasts three years.
- You keep it by avoiding at-fault crashes and moving violations during that period.
- The size of the discount is set by each insurer, so ask for the figure before you enroll.
- This is the genuine state-backed discount; ads for a 'compliant drivers program' are not.
Florida has one discount that is actually written into state law, and most eligible drivers never claim it. If you are 55 or older, a single approved course can lower your premium for about three years. It is the real version of what 'state program' ads promise, as we explain in our Florida compliant drivers program guide, and it is one of the discounts covered in our state auto insurance compliance guide.
Who Qualifies
- Age: 55 or older.
- Course: Completion of a mature driver discount course from a provider approved by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV). Most providers offer it online as a roughly 6-hour self-paced course.
- Record: To keep the discount for the full period, avoid at-fault crashes and moving violations.
- Policy: A Florida auto policy with a participating insurer. The discount applies to your premiums; the amount is up to each insurer.
How to Claim It, Step by Step
- Call your insurer first and ask what percentage it gives for a mature driver certificate, and which coverages it applies to.
- Choose an FLHSMV-approved provider. The FLHSMV website lists approved mature driver courses; avoid any provider that isn't on it.
- Complete the course and download your completion certificate.
- Send the certificate to your insurer and confirm the discount appears on your next declarations page; our guide on how to read an insurance policy shows where discounts are listed.
- Set a reminder for three years so you can retake the course before the discount expires.
The mature driver discount combines with multi-policy, paid-in-full and safe-driver discounts. Retirees who also own an RV can often bundle it; see California RV insurance if you travel west in winter.
Which Coverages It Helps
The statute targets the core premium components: liability, personal injury protection and collision. PIP is a required coverage in Florida, so a discount on it lowers the cost of staying legal; see Florida PIP insurance explained for what that coverage actually pays, and Florida minimum car insurance requirements for the full list of what you must carry.
Retirees on fixed incomes are often tempted to drop to Florida's bare minimum. With no bodily injury liability, one serious crash can put retirement savings at risk. If your savings exceed your liability limits, consider an umbrella policy.
Check whether your liability limits protect your retirement savings before deciding where to apply discount savings.
Audit your automotive coverage checklist across liability, collision, comprehensive, and medical defense layers.
