- Helicopter hull premiums average around 2% of insured hull value a year for experienced pilots, roughly double the rate for a fixed-gear piston airplane.
- Indicative premiums: Robinson R22 (~$300k hull) $4,000โ$8,000, Bell 206 (~$1.5M) $15,000โ$40,000 a year.
- Preferred rates typically need 1,000+ total hours, 100+ in make and model, and recurrent training every 12 months.
- Approved manufacturer training courses can earn 10โ20% premium discounts.
Helicopters use the same insurance structure as airplanes: agreed-value hull plus liability, governed by a pilot warranty. The price is very different, though. This spoke of our aircraft & aviation insurance explained hub explains why rotorcraft cost more to insure and how owners bring premiums down.
How Much Is Helicopter Insurance?
| Helicopter | Approx. Hull Value | Indicative Annual Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Robinson R22 | $300,000 | $4,000 โ $8,000 |
| Bell 206 | $1,500,000 | $15,000 โ $40,000 |
| Leonardo AW139 (commercial) | $5,000,000 | $45,000 โ $80,000 |
Compare those figures with the 0.9โ1.3% hull rate on a typical piston airplane in our airplane insurance cost guide. Higher loss frequency, expensive dynamic components (rotor blades, gearboxes and so on) and a small pool of insurers all push rotorcraft rates up. Commercial, utility and air-medical missions cost substantially more than private flying. Underwriters score each rotorcraft pilot individually, as explained in what is insurance underwriting, so two R44 owners can get very different quotes.
What Underwriters Want From Helicopter Pilots
- Total time: 1,000+ hours for preferred rates. Low-time pilots pay more and may be offered higher deductibles.
- Make and model time: 100+ hours in type is a common benchmark.
- Recurrent training: Certified training every 12 months, with manufacturer courses earning 10โ20% credits.
- Use: Private and business use is cheapest. Instruction, tours, utility and EMS work are rated much higher.
If you instruct in helicopters you don't own, you need your own non-owned liability policy. See flight instructor insurance. Sharing ownership to split a $5,000+ premium? Read aircraft partnership insurance first, so that every partner is a named insured.
Coverage Points Unique to Helicopters
Check how the policy treats ground-running and hover-taxi damage (in motion or not in motion), external-load or sling operations (usually excluded unless scheduled), and off-airport landings. The general rules on what hull cover does and doesn't pay are in what does aircraft hull insurance cover. Liability limits should be smooth rather than per-seat where possible (see smooth vs per-seat liability). Helicopter pilots also pay among the highest aviation flat extras on life insurance. See does life insurance cover private pilots. Under the FAA's MOSAIC changes, sport pilots can now fly certain helicopters with simplified flight controls. See light sport aircraft insurance.
