- Quad bike insurance (called ATV insurance in the US) is a specialty powersport policy. Liability, comprehensive, collision, medical payments and guest-rider cover are sold as separate building blocks.
- It isn't legally required everywhere. Pennsylvania requires liability for ATVs ridden off your own land, several states require it on public land or for road-registered use, and most don't require it on private property.
- Homeowners policies commonly exclude ATVs off the premises and may exclude them entirely. Farm ATVs need a farm policy or a specific endorsement.
- ATVs cause an annual average of more than 800 deaths and about 100,000 ER-treated injuries in the US (CPSC), which makes liability and medical cover the most valuable parts of the policy.
- Road-registered quads in the UK and street-legal UTVs in US states that allow them must meet motor-vehicle insurance rules.
Whether you call it a quad bike, an ATV, a four-wheeler or (for the side-by-side kind) a UTV, the insurance question is the same. Who pays when the machine rolls, gets stolen or hurts someone? The answer is usually not your homeowners policy and not your car policy. This guide covers quad bike insurance from end to end. It's part of our Motorcycle, Dirt Bike & Powersport Insurance hub. Two-wheel off-road riders should also read dirt bike insurance coverage.
Is ATV or Quad Bike Insurance Legally Required?
It depends on where you ride. Across states, the patterns look like this:
| Where You Ride | Typical Legal Requirement | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Your own land | No insurance mandate in most states | Most states |
| Land you don't own or lease | Liability insurance required in some states | Pennsylvania DCNR rule (no minimum amount set) |
| Public trails, state parks, OHV areas | Registration or permit required, and sometimes proof of insurance | Colorado OHV registration (no insurance mandate); New York registration with liability generally required off owner property |
| Public roads (where legal) | Full motor-vehicle registration and liability minimums | Street-legal UTVs in states that permit them; road-registered quads in the UK |
The same logic applies to two-wheelers. For a pattern-by-pattern list of states, see what states require dirt bike insurance.
What Quad Bike Insurance Covers
- Bodily injury & property damage liability: Covers injuries to other people and damage to their property. This is the most important coverage given ATV injury rates.
- Guest passenger / guest rider liability: Covers injuries to people riding with you or borrowing the machine. It's often excluded unless you add it.
- Comprehensive: Covers theft, fire, vandalism, flood and damage while trailered. It works the same way as motorcycle theft coverage.
- Collision: Covers rollover and crash damage to your quad, minus your deductible.
- Medical payments: Pays small medical bills for you and your passengers regardless of fault.
- Accessories: Covers winches, plows, racks, sprayers and aftermarket wheels. Check the sub-limit.
- Total loss valuation: Usually actual cash value. Some insurers offer new-vehicle replacement for the first year or two.
The CPSC reports an annual average of more than 800 deaths and roughly 100,000 emergency-department-treated injuries involving off-highway vehicles, with children among the victims. If someone is hurt on your quad, a six-figure claim is realistic. Low liability limits, or none, put your savings at risk. See how to know if you are underinsured.
Farm and Work Quads: The Coverage Gap Nobody Mentions
Quads are workhorses on farms, ranches and large properties. A recreational ATV policy may exclude or limit business use, and a standard homeowners form may exclude the vehicle completely. Farm quads are usually covered in one of three ways:
- Farm or ranch policy: Scheduled farm equipment plus farm liability. Make sure the ATV is listed by VIN.
- Commercial or inland marine equipment floater: Covers mobile equipment wherever it goes. See inland marine insurance explained.
- Commercial general liability: Covers businesses whose employees use quads, such as landscaping, surveying or events. See the commercial general liability guide. Employee injuries usually fall under workers' compensation instead.
How Much Does Quad Bike Insurance Cost?
Liability-only ATV cover is generally one of the cheapest powersport policies, because the machines rarely operate in traffic. Full coverage on a new sport quad or a high-end UTV rises with the machine's value. The main rating factors are machine value, engine size, use (recreational, farm or racing), the rider's age, storage security and deductible. Weigh deductible options with the deductible vs premium calculator. For comparison with road bikes, see motorcycle premiums in Colorado and Ohio.
Store the quad in a locked building and add a ground anchor or GPS tracker (ask whether your insurer gives a discount). Bundle it with your home or auto policy, choose a higher deductible, drop collision on older machines, and complete an ATV safety course. Keep youth riders on youth-sized machines. The CPSC advises against children under 16 riding adult-size ATVs.
Quad Bike Insurance vs Homeowners vs Car Insurance
| Scenario | Homeowners | Car Policy | Quad / ATV Policy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quad stolen from your shed | Often excluded (motorized vehicle) | No | Yes, with comprehensive |
| Guest injured on a public trail | Usually excluded off premises | No | Yes, with liability / guest cover |
| Rollover damage to the quad | No | No | Yes, with collision |
| Quad used on the farm | Varies, often limited | No | Limited. A farm policy may be needed |
Exclusions drive every row of that table. Learn to spot them in what is an exclusion in insurance, and if you're thinking about adding ATV cover to an existing policy, read what is an insurance endorsement.
