- An SR-22 is not insurance. It's a certificate your insurer files with the state to prove you carry at least the minimum liability cover.
- Commonly required after a DUI, driving uninsured, serious violations or a licence suspension, usually for about 3 years (it varies by state).
- The filing fee is usually modest (often around $15–$50). The real cost is the high-risk premium behind it (see how much does car insurance go up after a DUI).
- If your policy lapses, the insurer notifies the state (usually with an SR-26), which can lead to a licence suspension and restart the clock.
- Florida and Virginia use the FR-44, which requires double the state minimum liability limits. In Florida that's 100/300/50.
If a court or DMV tells you to 'get SR-22 insurance', you're being told to prove to the state that you're insured, and to keep proving it for a set period. This guide is part of our car insurance for high-risk and convicted drivers series. It explains how the filing works, what it costs and how to get through the requirement period without restarting it.
Who Needs an SR-22?
- DUI/DWI conviction: the most common trigger. See how much does car insurance go up after a DUI.
- Driving without insurance, or causing an accident while uninsured. See what happens if you crash without insurance.
- Licence suspension or revocation, including reinstatement after one. See can you get auto insurance with a suspended license.
- Serious or repeat violations, such as reckless driving. See how long does reckless driving affect insurance.
- Unpaid accident judgments in some states.
How the SR-22 Process Works
- Buy a policy from an insurer that offers SR-22 filings in your state. Many standard carriers do, and non-standard auto insurance carriers specialize in it.
- The insurer files the SR-22 electronically with your state DMV and charges a filing fee.
- Keep the policy continuously in force for the whole requirement period, usually about 3 years.
- If the policy cancels or lapses, the insurer files an SR-26 (cancellation) and the DMV can suspend your licence.
- When the period ends, confirm with the DMV that the requirement has been lifted before you change or drop cover.
A lapse of even a few days can trigger suspension, and in many states it resets the requirement period. Set up automatic payments, and read what happens when insurance expires and can you pause car insurance before you change anything.
SR-22 vs FR-44
| Feature | SR-22 | FR-44 (Florida & Virginia) |
|---|---|---|
| What it proves | State minimum liability | Double the state minimum liability |
| Florida limits | N/A (FR-44 used for DUI) | $100,000 / $300,000 bodily injury; $50,000 property damage |
| Typical period | About 3 years | About 3 years |
| Typical triggers | DUI, uninsured driving, suspensions | DUI-related convictions |
| Premium effect | Driven by the underlying violation | Higher, because of the higher mandatory limits |

No Car? Use a Non-Owner SR-22
If you need an SR-22 to reinstate your licence but don't own a vehicle, a named non-owner car insurance policy with an SR-22 attached is usually the cheapest way to comply. It covers your liability when you drive borrowed cars. If no insurer will write you at all, your state's assigned risk auto insurance plan must offer cover.
UK Readers: Is There an SR-22 Equivalent?
No. UK insurers don't file certificates with the DVLA. Instead, the conviction itself is the issue, and you must declare it while it's unspent.
